What does it mean to say, "Worship does God's story?" It is this: Worship proclaims, enacts, and sings God's story. Worship is not a program. Nor is worship about me. Worship is a narrative. God's narrative of the world from its beginning to its end. How will the world know its own story unless we do that story in public worship?

Ritschl writes, "The ultimate problem, which has caused our theological helplessness, lies in the separation between Jesus Christ and the Church." Each time I read this I can't help but think of how distorted our image of living out Christ's way into our communities actually is. When we read of Jesus and his attempts to get us thinking about how to bring the kingdom of God here and now, I wonder how we got all mixed up.

lentSo, Lent is coming: a time for introspection and journey. Thisyear during Lent at The Search, we will be stripping away all the trappings the church have placed on our wild Messiah and focus on what it actually means to be captured by Jesus and his way. I hope you will journey with us beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 17th at 6:30 p.m. In the Fellowship Hall where we will worship around the Labyrinth. Then each Sunday as we move towards Easter, we will examine what essentials we truly need to be followers of Christ.

Ash Wednesday falls on February 17 this year and we will have our prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes we use are burned from the palms we celebrated with on Palm Sunday.

This special service centers us on our road ahead during Lent with an opportunity to walk the Labyrinth after worship. Our worship gathering this year will be infused with the sounds from the Chancel Choir Ensemble, instrumental groups, and a variety of music to sing that will be reflective, quiet and meditative. An opportunity to receive the ashes will be given, as we gather around the Labyrinth in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us for the beginning of Lent!

The third graders of UCC have been enjoying a special five-week class on Learning to Use Your Bible. Their series continues through February 7 during the 10 a.m. Sunday School hour in Room 218. The class culminates that day with the presentation of Bibles during 11 a.m. worship. The Bibles are given each year from endowment funds created in memory of Mrs. May Henson, a beloved member of UCC, who taught children in Church School for over forty years. In addition, Bibles are purchased through a foundation created in loving memory of Jeff D. Conatser.

Please extend your thanks to this year's teachers, Susan and Jim Smith, and to the Third Grade Shepherds: Alissa & Mark Curtiss, Nikki & Pat Berry, Carla Vogel & Kirk Alland, Heather & Steven Harris, Kat Harvey, and Leigh & Bill Pauling. It truly takes our whole church family to raise our children in the faith. We are blessed to have these adults sharing their time and talents in this way.
